The Norton and LifeLock Brands are part of NortonLifeLock Inc. Edit: changed the incorrect word 'file time' to 'file type' Message Edited by reese_anschultz on 12-29-2009 01:53 PM
WORM VIRUS DOWNLOAD WINDOWS
Windows frequently tries to determine the 'real' file type and 'run' the file directly or using the appropriate viewer. mp3 doesn't necessary mean that it is an mp3 file. If some other vulnerability is found in some MP3 player, though, you can bet that somebody will exploit it with malware.Īs others have pointed out, just because the file ends in. I don't believe that this vulnerability has anything to do with an actual MP3 file though. There currently are exploits for pictures - simply viewing a picture under the right circumstance can infect you. Once the malware writers figured out how turn that data into malicious code, the old thinking was completely invalid. As vulnerabilities (aka bugs) were found in various programs, it was discovered that certain classes of vulnerabilities could be exploited to 'execute' data.
WORM VIRUS DOWNLOAD CODE
When computer viruses and worms were first introduced many years ago, the common thought was you were safe so long as you didn't 'execute' anything because these worms and viruses just added themselves to other code when executed. Does this have anything to do with your Norton product? Which Norton product do you have and what version please?įirstly, I'm mostly a network guy so disk based viruses are not my forte. Don't know if this is actually answering your question. I just Googled and found this information. How much truth there is to this, I don't. A virus can only PRETEND to be an mp3 file This makes it completely useless.Īlso, an mp3 file can ONLY contain SOUND, a virus is data, and so the mp3 file format would not be accepted. Hence, the virus would not be able to do anything because it can only be opened by a media player, but the media player cannot open the file because it is not coded music. If the mp3 file is a virus masquerading as an mp3 file, the media player will NOT play it because it does not recognise it as a coded media file.

There is no way a virus can be attached to an mp3 file because it is a standardised file format and hence can only be played as MUSIC, as that is what an mp3 file is.
